Alias Sketchbook
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Alias Sketchbook Pro, currently on version 2.0, is a natural media productivity program created specifically for use with touch sensitive pen and tablet interfaces, such as Wacom graphics tablets or Tablet PCs. Sketchbook Pro features an uncluttered interface, and realistic painting and drawing tools such as pencils, markers and brushes. Because it makes use of the pressure-sensitivity features of Wacom Tablets and Tablet PCs, it allows artists to sketch naturally and create effects similar to traditional materials.
Alias, and Sketchbook along with it, appear to have been acquired by Autodesk, and following any of the links to Alias' former website results in a redirect to Autodesk's site. It would appear Autodesk is not taking Sketchbook very seriously, as the product page is confusingly laid out and somewhat incomplete - this page in particular even mentions "Alias Sketchbook" on one line.
The latest version supports layers and export to Photoshop (.psd) format, along with custom brushes.
The software is available for both Windows and Macintosh, and there is a free trial available at Alias's website. Notably, the software is used by Mike Krahulik of Penny Arcade. 1
If you follow the forums on Alias about Sketchbook it appears the program has been abandoned by the company and it has no future plans to update it. Though they still sell it the program stands on it's own two legs but could still use some major support upgrades. It doesn't support Wacom Tablet pressure is one of the biggest challenges that faces it.
