The Ice Dome is a prefabricated structure constructed in Finland. Assembly of the building began in August 2006. The Altrincham Ice Dome was due to open on 24th September 2006 when the Manchester Phoenix were scheduled to play host to the Sheffield Steelers in their opening home game. But due to several delays, the ice rink was Supposed to have opened on the 17th February 2007 against the Edinburgh Capitals, with a reduced capacity of 1,200 (this is expected to increase with each week that passes before the end of the season). However, the ice rink builders decided to have the first game the following evening, due to the ice possibly not being ready. This was also postponed due to the ice surface not being ready, and the first game took place on 25th February 2007 against the Basingstoke Bison. The number of people allowed into the building was just 1,000. Capacity is around 1,200 as of March 15th 2007.
The rink has a life expectancy of 15 years, but is expected to be replaced in 5 years time by a larger permanent facility on land adjacent to the current build. The building is costing around £2.5m.
The rink opened its doors to the public for ice skating session on March 16th 2007.
