Alvan Ikoku

Alvan Ikoku (1900–1971) was a Nigerian educator, statesman, activist and politician. He was educated at the University of London, where he earned a degree in Philosophy. He established one of the earliest private secondary schools in Nigeria, the Aggrey Memorial College. In the 1950s, he was briefly involved in politics, but his group could not weaken the dominant parties in the country. He later left politics and concentrated his effort on improving the quality of education in the country. He was also a former president of the Nigeria Union of Teachers.
