[edit] spoilers?

should this page have the spoilers boilerplate? american audiences don't have the airing of season 10.5 until april 6th, so the daniel thing was totally unknown to me.

[edit] Ford doesn't have the gene

Ford does not have the Ancient Gene. Martin Gero confirmed it in this Gateworld forum message -- Andromeda 22:42, 24 July 2005 (UTC)

Then how in God's name did he pilot that jumper? LD September 17 2005
He didn't. It is an automated system. Please read the link I posted. Thanks. --Andromeda 21:01, 17 September 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Gene carriers from Earth

I've changed it, to make it a little easier. LD 18:49 4 February 2006 (UTC)

What's with the repeated mentions of "Lost City Part 1" after O'Niell's name? (Previous not from me) When listing episodes for O'Neill, they all say Lost City Part 1, but link to different articles. Don't know the intent or enough about Wikipedia to fix them, but I wanted to help out by mentioning it.216.119.235.42 05:30, 30 May 2006 (UTC)

That was once true, but was eventually fixed. The June the 13th version of this article had the correct references, but they have since been removed. Since I know of no reason not to restore them, I will. Luis Dantas 19:58, 31 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] gene therapy

was it not mentioned somewhere that (almost) all of the Atlantis mission members have received therapy?

[edit] "ancient gene" article in new scientist

[edit] Why no women with the ATA gene?

I know that the female ANCIENTS did have the gene as was shown in a few episodes but why do you modern day human women have the Ancient gene? We've only seen men with the gene, why is this? Would the Ancient gene be gender specific? Since there seem to be more men with the ATA gene than women, would they need to find a woman with the gene and have a women only gene therapy as well or what exactly?

This argument may be suppored by the whole Dr. Kusanagi incident, because in "The Gift", Beckett mentioned her having the gene, if she was given the therapy then more women would have the gene, but this seems to support the male and female Ancient genes being distinct. Because even Weir doesn't have the gene it seems, I know she could have been one of the 52% failiures but all the other women scientists and such don't appear to have it.

Faris b 07:43, 3 September 2006 (UTC)

Could the gene be X-linked recessive so that females would have to have the gene on both X chromosomes in order to use it. Irate velociraptor 08:28, 29 October 2006 (UTC)

And could just be that the writers had not need a female character with the gene yet. Don't complicate things that much, please. --Andromeda 08:45, 29 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] ATA gene frequency?

What is the frequency in which the ATA gene occurs in the populations on Earth? I read on the net (sorry, don't remember where) that it's prevalance is 1 in 16000.

Anyone else heard of these or any stats?

Faris b 07:40, 28 October 2006 (UTC)

Personal opinion, I really doubt that it's that high, since we're talking nearly 400,000 humans with the ATA gene in that case, but we've never been given any information as to the actual rate of occurance. JBK405 17:45, 28 October 2006 (UTC)

Why would that be remarkable? I am no Stargate expert, but it seems to me that since so many characters have the ATA gene 1 in 16000 is actually way too rare to match the shows. Even 1 in 3 seems a far better estimate, unless there is some plot point that I failed to notice (and that is quite likely the case). Luis Dantas 10:13, 26 December 2006 (UTC)
On second thought, after watching the first part of SG-1 eigth-season episode "Moebius", it seems to me that there is a marked shift on emphasys between shows. An Earth-based show such as SG-1 benefits from having their ATA carriers few and far between so that they do not have too much of a reason to tackle Ancient technology (which would considerably change the dynamics of the show). That is probably why even nearly a year after knowing for sure that O'Neill is a strong carrier (from 2nd-season's "The Fifth Race", 7th-season's "Lost City" and 8th-season's "It's Good to Be King") Teal'c and the others are still somewhat relutant to go ahead and say that yes, O'Neill has the gene and they probably should have him try and use all the Ancient tech they have found of late. That would be the logical thing to do, but that is not SG-1's premise; SG-1 is about keeping Earth safe and maintaining the Status Quo (and special effects budgets) stable; Atlantis is the show that grabs new techonology without a thought - and which by necessity has a good supply of characters who may use that tech. Luis Dantas 16:43, 30 December 2006 (UTC)

you forgot about the gene therapy. and also, weir probably picked people with the ata gene to join her expedition. remember how sheppard was suddenly allowed to come along when it was discovered he had the gene? Maartentje 17:07, 30 December 2006 (UTC)

Not really; I think the gene therapy was a good idea to allow for the change of focus. But when one considers how many of those supposedly very rare people just happenned to enter the military and specifically the SGC ranks, one gets the sense that left-handed people are harder to find than ATA carriers. Which now, in fact, they are, if one allows for the possibility of using the gene therapy on them. Perhaps there is some reason why that therapy isn't automatically granted to all SGC personnel (Ford apparently never got it, and IRL, as noted, it often leads to serious health risks), and that would make a good plot point for future episodes too. But for the time being, we simply do not know of any good reason not to use it on all troops available. Luis Dantas 17:33, 31 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Lorne's team and episode "Coup d'Etat"

In that episode Weir claims that all of Lorne's team have the ATA gene, except for Toreil (sp?). That looks like further confirmation that Lorne himself has the gene. Is there an article on this Toreil character? I tried and failed to find one. Luis Dantas 10:21, 26 December 2006 (UTC)

We already knew Maj. Lorne had the ATA gene as he's been seen flying the jumpers since the beginning of season 2, we just don't know how, meaning is he a natural carrier or did he get the gene therapy.

[edit] Daniel Jackson & The ATA Gene

Daniel Jackson might only have been able to uses Merlin's repository device because he was once ascended, possibly when someone is ascended, they might gain the ATA gene. --Heruur 19:56, 2 March 2007 (UTC)
