Bryant was born in Ettingham, New Hampshire. He was elected mayor of San Francisco in 1875 to replace James Otis. Just two and a half years later on May 11, 1882, Bryant was crossing the San Francisco Bay on a ferry. Bryant fell off the ferry and into the bay, and drowned.
