[edit] Plot summary
The episode begins with a scene in which Coda discusses Dewey Novak with one of her aides. She takes the space elevator to the capital, Capitol Hill, where her arrival is met by much fanfare. She summons Dewey for an immediate meeting.
Talho's new look attracts stares and speculation. She helps Holland with his work adjusting a bridge terminal on the Gekko. In the kitchen, Eureka tells Renton that his presence helps her cope with her memories of her past. He is moments from kissing her when she senses that the Nirvash is upset.
In the fabrication area, the Nirvash is swinging its arms about, as if rejecting the newly installed hardware. Eureka tells the Tresor staff that the Nirvash will not accept returning to its previous state. Dr. Morita, in the next scene, tells the Gekko crew that a complete redesign of the Nirvash's hardware will be necessary. At the mention of Dr. Greg Egan, Jobs describes the eccentric archetype researcher in detail, and Renton notices a very large man in a lab coat drinking tea with Gonzy. It is quickly revealed that this man is none other than Dr. Egan himself, who was once married to Mischa.
He invites Eureka, Renton, Holland, and Mischa to his laboratory, which is located inside a large arboretum. He produces a replica of the Voyager Golden Record, obliquely introducing his theory that the Scub Coral is a living organism, and that Eureka is a message from the planet. He posits that since Eureka did not know anything when she was discovered, her message to humanity is that the Scub Coral does not know anything. He wonders if both humanity and Scub Coral can coexist, but is frustrated because he cannot determine anything due to a lack of data. He sketches an aircraft on the nearby chalkboard, saying that this is the design that the archetype data suggests.
In the Sages' audience room, Dewey introduces the Ageha Squad to Coda. One of them activates a device that disables and exposes listening devices, and another shoots the aide who was carrying one. She asks Dewey about humanity's dilemma—because humans have populated the planet, they cannot leave with their spacecraft now that the planet has become hostile. Dewey answers that humanity has no choice but to eliminate the Coralians before all humans are destroyed.
The redesign of the Nirvash's upgrade progresses smoothly, now that the technicians are using the "correct" hardware. Renton asks Dr. Morita where the board is, and he answers that Axel, Renton's grandfather, is handling it.
Aboard the Izumo, Anemone, after talking to Gulliver about Dewey meeting Coda, laughs at Dominic after he is removed from the bridge by the Ageha children. The children administer the first field test of the AFX's "Project Orange" main weapons. At the same time the weapons impact the planet, both Anemone and Eureka sense an impending counterattack.
Near Ferris City, a Coralian sphere appears with a swarm of pink-eyed creatures. The creatures, called "Coralian antibodies (抗体コーラリアン Kōtai Kōrarian?)", attack the city and its residents, brutally killing every human in sight. A small fleet of UF airships and KLF squadrons are dispatched to the city, but they are easily overwhelmed. As the Ageha children gleefully collect the data from the test, Dominic contacts Dewey regarding a now-unresponsive Anemone, but the colonel dismisses her condition.
A small band of Gekko crew members and Tresor scientists watch the destruction from one of Tresor's rooftops, and Holland decides to have the Tresor technicians perform the upgrade to the Nirvash aboard the Gekko.
[edit] Significance
This episode first describes the "Limit of Questions (クダンの限界 Kudan no genkai?)", described in more detail by Norb in "Raise Your Hand".
