Warning templates should always be used with the "subst:" keyword, as strongly suggested on Wikipedia:Template substitution. They are shown without subst here to reduce the display space occupied by this table, not to encourage their use without subst. For example, type {{subst:uw-vandalism1}}~~~~ (not {{uw-vandalism1}}) to warn common first-time vandals.
The levels of templates are:
- Assumes good faith
- No faith assumption
- Assumes bad faith; stern cease and desist
- Assumes bad faith; strong cease and desist, last warning

[edit] Invitation to register?
This is a mighty impressive looking template, but I wonder about the desirability of recommending to anon vandals that they stop being silly and register. True, registered AOL-using vandals are easier to keep tabs on than AOL-using anon vandals; and the same thing is true for many other vandals as well. (Also, WP elsewhere encourages everybody to register.) But as long as your average anon continues to want to vandalize, isn't it more convenient for the garbage disposal crew that he continues to be an anon? -- Hoary 04:38, 15 October 2005 (UTC)
- The problem is that if someone's on a shared IP address and are blocked, that block will also apply to everyone else (including the good users - I've seen plenty of IPs with a mix of good and bad edits) using the same address. It's much easier to block a username and be done with it - though the nasty ones could always come back with more usernames until their IP is blocked anyway. But if someone's a vandal, asking them to be nice and register so they can be separated from their IP address(es) and pinned down more easily (or at least have their bad work "credited" to their name) seems a little silly. And I'll bet that many people reading the recent changes page are more likely to look at edits/new pages from IPs. --Indium 03:47, 17 November 2005 (UTC)

- My idea was only that vandals/IPs with spurious edits should be asked politely to stop, and the potential to edit Wikipedia in the future made me believe that such IP users that condone in vandalism (perhaps bored or something at the moment) will stop (as I have seen people do after the Anon vandal message). The welcome only insiuates what we are here to do in reality, and perhaps potential editors - if at first being a vandal - could be asked to joined the site, with a few guides to help them on the way. εγκυκλοπαίδεια*(talk) 04:09, 1 December 2005 (UTC)
- This tag does seem to work quite well. I'm 2 for 2 with users immediately stopping vandalism after I post this on the talk page for their IP address. I haven't had to take any further action. Kafziel 17:03, 6 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Instructions on how to use this template?
I found that an anonymous user was vandalizing various pages, so I wanted to report this or warn the user or whatever. I've spent the last half-hour trying to figure out how to do this, because there are no clear instructions anywhere about it. It seems that the first thing to do is to give the user this warning—but how do I do that, and where?
This page is supposed to provide documentation for this template, so it seems to me that here would be a good place to give a quick rundown on how someone like me might use the template to deliver a warning to a particular user. Or maybe there needs to be a separate page with step-by-step instructions on how to use this sort of template in general, with links on each of the individual template pages to that page.
