Anthem is a song written by Canadian progressive rock trio Rush. It appears on their Fly by Night album from 1975. The lyrics are heavily influenced by novelist and philosopher Ayn Rand, whose ideas heavily influenced Rush lyricist Neil Peart in that time period; the song's title is taken straight from Rand's novella Anthem.
The song is, like Rand's writings, about individualism and love and respect for the self and ego. It urges listeners to live for themselves and realize that they are in charge of their own lives. Musically, "Anthem" is a classic example of early Rush, heavy and loud, with fast guitar, drum, and bass licks, and featuring the very high-pitched early singing style of Geddy Lee.
