Antivalentinism
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Antivalentinism refers to the belief that Saint Valentine’s Day (February 14th) has become commercialized and lost its significance of lovers expressing love for each other. It can also be referred to as the belief in which true Valentines do not exist, and that it no longer has love appeal and is specifically directed towards commercial value.

[edit] Commercialism
Valentine’s Day as been dubbed as a “Hallmark holiday” because of the millions of valentines exchanged each Valentines Day and a large portion of these cards that are purchased are Hallmark cards. Many companies and businesses make large profits from selling massive amounts of cards, flowers, chocolates, candies, stuffed animals etc. Many people believe this takes away from the values, significance and meaning of Valentines Day.
[edit] Alternatives
Singles Awareness Day (SAD) is a play on Valentines Day that is usually celebrated on the 14th of February but some like the 13th or 15th of February better to get away from the commercialism of Valentine’s Day. People gather to celebrate their single situation and greet each other with "Happy SAD!"
[edit] Anti-Valentine Cards
Anti-Valentine Cards are becoming increasingly more popular throughout card stores. These cards are an example of Antivalentinism as they promote being single and being against Valentine's Day in particular. This is somewhat contradictory because being against Valentine's Day is usually associated with being against card buying and the commercial aspects.
