John Haven Emerson worked on medical resuscitation apparatus including iron lungs.
- 5 February 1906: He was born in New York City.
- At age 22: he started a machine shop, which he later moved to 15 Brattle Street in Harvard Square in New York. There he built medical apparatus.
- 1928: He designed a medical Barcroft-Warburg apparatus.
- 1930: He designed a micromanipulator.
- 1930's: Prompted by a current polio epidemic, he designed an iron lung.
- During WWII: He worked on demand valves for high-altitude flying and scuba for the US Navy.
- 1957: He built a volume plethysmograph to measure residual lung volume.
- February 1997: He died.
