From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The ARCHIVE Institute is an inter-disciplinary center for examining relationships between architecture and public health disasters. ARCHIVE is an acronym for "Architectural Research Concerning Health, Infections and Various Epidemics". The organization is a registered non profit in the United States and has project directors in several locations including Germany, Jamaica, Singapore and South Africa.
The institute which is currently headed by its founder Peter Williams has placed the pandemic of HIV/AIDS at the forefront of its work. In so doing, the organization has attracted a number of leading academics and practitioners. These include individuals from varied disciplines such as environmental architect Ken Yeang and Michael Mutter, senior advisor to the UN.
Among the many activities of the institute, projects such as design competitions and field construction build outs are an active part of their work. In 2006, the institute organized a field based project to Thailand and has partnered with Habitat for Humanity to complete other projects across South East Asia. The institute cites organizations such as Architecture for Humanity and Architects for Aid as inspiration for its development.
