Ardrossan North railway station was a railway station serving the town of Ardrossan, North Ayrshire, Scotland as part of the Lanarkshire and Ayrshire Railway.
[edit] History
The station opened on 3 September 1888 and was simply known as Ardrossan. On 1 October 1906 it became known as Ardrossan Town, however the station closed on 1 January 1917 due to wartime economy. It was reopened on 1 February 1919 and upon the grouping of the L&AR into the London, Midland and Scottish Railway in 1923, the station was renamed Ardrossan North on 2 June 1924. Locally, the station was sometimes referred to as Ardrossan Montgomerie Street, due to the fact that the station building was sited on Montgomerie Street. The station closed to passengers on 4 July 1932, however it was reopened for a time within two years when a special return fare price was introduced. The line saw use for trains going to Montgomerie Pier and the nearby Shell Mex plant until 1968.
Railway track still existed at this location until the 1980s in use as a spur line onto the former Glasgow and South Western Railway on the other side of the harbour. This served the nearby bitumen plant, and the track ended at the site of the railway bridge.
Today parts of the station platforms are still in existence, though heavily overgrown. The site of the station building is now occupied by the depot for Clyde Coast Coaches.
