Arieş

The Arieş (Romanian; Hungarian: Aranyos) is a river in Transylvania, western Romania. Its source is in the Bihor Mountains, part of the Apuseni Mountains. Its length is approx. 164 km. It flows into the Mureş near Luduş. It flows through the counties Alba and Cluj. The cities Turda and Câmpia Turzii lie on the river Arieş. The valley of the river is also named "Ţara Moţilor", a beautiful rustic region but also a very important mining region (Roşia Montană), rich in gold, silver or uranium. The Hungarian name (Aranyos) means "Golden", referring to the minerals in the river. Many settlements in the area (eg. Aranyosgyéres, Aranyosgerend) and administrative divisions (eg. the former Székely Aranyosszék) bear the river's name.
