[edit] Design
The armed suit is much like a bipedal tank and resembling what is known as a mech, an artificial exoskeleton. It appears to have a cockpit, yet it is worn around the body. They are all well armored, use master/slave functionality, have battery-powered limbs, and a rapid-fire weapon. The power source remains unknown. It is said that the armed suit is capable of operating unmanned like some vehicles, but there is no apparent evidence to support this claim. Because of the notable advantages they have over tanks, they serve as a rival to the Tachikomas and other mini-tanks. In the Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex series, they serve as a negative foreshadowing of things to come.
Throughout the series and various games situated in the Ghost in the Shell universe several types of armed suits appear:
[edit] Type 1
The first armed suit appeared in Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. It is body armor with a humanoid design, with 4 arms and long legs. The long legs allow for extremely high jumps yet cause instability. The 2 bigger arms are fitted with multiple large weapons. The armor is extremely thick, able to resist severe punishment. The only time the armed suit was ever successfully destroyed was when the Tachikomas made a combined effort kamikaze attack on the armed suit. It was noted that .50 caliber bullets could penetrate the suit after several of them are fired, possibly killing the pilot, though initial shots would make a dent in the suit.
In episode 21, one of the members of the NARC squad refers to this suit as the JMSDF Type 303.
[edit] Type 2
This armed suit is seen in the Stand Alone Complex video game for the Playstation 2. It is much bigger, bulkier, and is a little less humanoid in appearance. This armed suit is a tough enemy at any range and is hard to kill with most weapons. The armed suit has powerful arms it uses in melee attacks. Though tough, it is very clumsy and sluggish in its movements. It is equipped with a hard-hitting, slow firing machine gun and a light rocket launcher that can fire 3 rockets simultaneously.
[edit] Type 3
This armed suit is seen in Ghost in the Shell: S.A.C. 2nd GIG. Unlike the previous model, this suit makes up for some of its quirks. The shape is insectoid and has very long arms. The legs are shorter and human-like, therefore more stable. The suit also has legs sprouting from the back, providing extra stability. The most notable weaponry is the minigun, which is located on the rear, similar in design to the JSDF's anti-tank helicopters, the Jigabachi. These suits are also quite agile yet lack the armor aforementioned suits have.
[edit] Type 4
A suit that could appear in Ghost in the Shell: S.A.C. Solid State Society, not much is known about this model. Drawings of the design show it will have some resemblance to the first with some improvements to the limbs.
