Arthur Mooring

Sir Arthur George Rixson Mooring known as Sir George Mooring (born November 23, 1908 – died 1969) was educated at Bedford Modern School and Queens' College, Cambridge before entering the Colonial Service in 1931. He served there for a number of years in Nigeria before joining the Royal West African Frontier Forces, serving in West Africa, India and Burma. He was mentioned in dispatches and gained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Following the Second World War, he returned to Nigeria and rose to become the Deputy Governor of the Western region. He was knighted in 1957? In 1959 he became the British Resident to the Sultan of Zanzibar, a position he held until independence in 1963., when he was further knighted with a KCMG and awarded the Order of the Brilliant Star by the Sultan of Zanzibar. He married Patricia Josephine Hare-Duke in 19// and had one son, William, born in 1949 and one daughter, Julia, born in 1951.
