I find Wikipedia's deletion and debate policy curious.
The way it stands, if an Administrator is unfamiliar with
a particular subject matter, they assume everyone is, and
thus deem it "non-notable".
Further, it does little good to provide documentation to refute
the decision to delete, because people are stubborn by nature,
and are loathe to reversing their mindset.
If this sounds like sour grapes, well, I suppose it is.
The fact is, I hate putting a lot of work into an article, only
do have it dismissed out-of-hand.

I understand your frustration, particularly since it is clear you did put in a lot of work to the article.
There are guidelines Wikipedia editors use for deciding notability. Of course someone in (say) London will probably never have heard of a huge craze in (say) Rio and it's down to the editors to decide using a variety of tools if something really is notable.
A single excellent argument backed with a solid reference should defeat any vote to delete.
In fairness, I don't believe your article was dimissed "out of hand" - there was plenty of time for you to make your case strongly and the admin's decision was that you didn't succeed in doing that. That's a shame.
You can ask the admin to post a copy of the deleted article to your user space and work on it there until you're happy it'll pass notability guidelines... I've seen others do this.
Whatever you decide to do, good luck with it. You'd clearly be an asset to Wikipedia if you decided to stick around and contribute with other articles, so I hope you do.

Thank you very much for the kind words and sentiments.
You know what though? I think I am through with Wikipedia.
When my article was deleted within 3 minutes of being posted,
that pretty much laid out the sensibility of this place for me.
I was convinced when I provided strong arguments, and no one even took the time to go
over those.
I am not so egotistical to think that I should be given an automatic "pass", but
for goodness sake, people should ease their foot off the accelerator a bit here!
At the very least, an article should not be deleted barely before "the ink is dry"
on it (take a look at the Deletion Logs of some of the Admins -- they delete at such a rapid
clip, that it is obvious no serious investigation as to the worthiness of an article
could have taken place)Example: Deletion Log
Anyway, these are just my opinions.
