Hence the members presently are:
- the 10 current members of ASEAN
- plus the three additional East Asian nations
[edit] History
The first leaders' meeting was held in 1997 and the group's signifiance and importance was strengthened by the Asian Financial Crisis. The grouping was institutionalised by 1999 [1]. More recently however there has been the suggestion that the significance of the grouping is being eclipsed by the East Asia Summit (EAS) but that is by no means certain given the embryonic nature of the EAS.
[edit] Achievements
ASEAN Plus Three in establishing the Chiang Mai Initiative has been credited as forming the basis for financial stability in Asia [2], the lack of such stability being a contributing factor to the Asian Financial Crisis.
