[edit] University of Kentucky graduate

Many reputable websites (Yahoo, Infoplease, and others) and fansites claim she graduated from the University of Kentucky. IMDB claims otherwise. While she has donated to Kentucky, lectured there, and attended games there, the University always mentions her as an alumna, but not as a graduate (as they do for other alumni). Furthermore, the list of the (College of) Arts and Sciences Advisory Board members [1] [2] does not list her affiliation (degree and year). Therefore, my guess is that she did not graduate. There is a possibility that she requested Kentucky to hide her degree info, but I don't see why she would. Anyhow, it's quite interesting how Yahoo [3] and Ask Men [4] have extensive biographies on her and state (or imply) that she has a degree, while IMDB states once stated otherwise. preceding unsigned comment by 24.13.56.195 (talk • contribs) 19:09, November 20, 2005

Just to note, IMDB is a place rife with error. If real, factual evidence were to come into public knowledge, the page would change. Until then, it stays. Gspawn 09:12, 21 January 2006 (UTC)
Many more authoritative sites (including her sisters official one, and Sports Illustrated) mention that she is Phi Beta Kappa which a rare honour only extended to a few graduates. MJBurrage 11:36, 9 February 2006 (UTC)
FYI-- with regard to Phi Beta Kappa, you can be elected in your Junior Year, like I was....you don't have to graduate to remain one, either. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 205.188.116.199 (talkcontribs) 13:21, April 20, 2006 (UTC)
IMDB changes back and fourth on this issue as people keep submitting un-sourced trivia. Most other web sites appear to be quoting from Wikipedia on this topic with the date of their info capture from Wikipedia effecting what they say. None of them are sourced.
All of the websites I have found that are independently written imply and/or outright say she did graduate. [5] [6] [7]. It seems very odd that someone doing as well as she was in school (Phi Beta Kappa, a major, and four minors) would just walk away only one class shy of graduating. While—if true—it would make an interesting bit of trivia (and explains it’s widespread, but un-sourced repetition).
This University of Kentucky site calls her an Alumna, which contrary to the wikipedia entry, does in official use mean a female graduate [8] [9] [10] [11] [12] [13].
I suggest that unless someone can come up with a confirmable source on the matter we leave out any implication that she did not graduate. —MJBurrage 22:59, 1 May 2006 (UTC)
RE: "ALUMNA" which you seem to be attached to -- are you at all familiar with AMERICAN SORORITIES, or colleges? if you LEAVE (sorority, society, organization) you may be considered and formally referred to as one EVEN IF YOU DID NOT GRADUATE.
someone go to the library and get all the publicity, circa RUBY IN PARADISE, where it romanticised the notion that she drove all the way from MEMPHIS to HOLLYWOOD to pursue her dream a few credits shy of graduation.....
  • ALL other sources on the UK website might say she is an "alumna" but it doesn't specify (honorary or not) the EXACT YEAR (http://www.as.uky.edu/Admin/Alumni/advisory_board.aspx) because she DID NOT GRADUATE WITH HER CLASS.
  • also, she was only ELECTED to PBK, but NOT INDUCTED, because that formally HAPPENS AT GRADUATION, which she DID NOT go through.
preceding unsigned comments by 205.188.116.199 (talk • contribs) 9 May 2006 (UTC)
I do understand that many groups use alumna for a former member, but colleges and universities almost always use it only for graduates. Regardless, UK calls her an alumna, and that is what I wrote in her article. Please, cite an authoritative source or leave comments about not graduating out of the article. (And that includes—election versus induction—to Phi Beta Kappa. Cite sources) —MJBurrage 13:24, 10 May 2006 (UTC)
I am a MEMBER of PBK. I know. OK? =) You can be elected in your junior year and leave (not graduate) by your senior year, and miss your induction ceremony, but the honor of the election is still yours.
btw, wikipedia lists Tiger Woods under alumni of Stanford, even if he DID NOT graduate. preceding unsigned comments by 205.188.116.199 (talk • contribs) 20:10, 10 May 2006 (UTC)
I never said you do not know about PBK, I said you need a valid source about Ashley Judd. The sites I listed above (CNN/SI Interview, and her sisters official website) say she is Phi Beta Kapa, and UK says she is an alumna. There is no reliable source anywhere that I have found that says she did not graduate, or that she is not a memebr of PBK. Wihout such a source, those comments stay out of the article. —MJBurrage 03:16, 11 May 2006 (UTC)
I don't see a dispute about PBK. Elected/Initiated = PBK honor. Also, it's confirmed that SHE DID NOT GRADUATE WITH HER CLASS. preceding unsigned comments by 205.188.116.199 (talk • contribs) 05:37, 11 May 2006 (UTC)
Where is it Confirmed, give a reliable source, or leave it off the page. What the page said was, that she is an alumna (confirmed by UK) and that she is PBK (without going into elected vs. inducted distinction. If you want to get more detailed cite a source. —MJBurrage 12:47, 11 May 2006 (UTC)
She's NOT listed under 1990 in the Alumni section anywhere. I think the point is lost on you that SHE DID NOT GRADUATE WITH HER CLASS. That is the only point some of us are making. She may have gotten her degree several years later however, the romanticized magazine publicity for "Ruby in Paradise" stands -- she left school and drove by herself from Memphis to Los Angeles to start acting. Her sister Wynonna bought her a house in Malibu that subsequently burnt down. (etc....) preceding unsigned comment by 64.12.116.133 (talk • contribs) 22:11, 11 May 2006 (UTC)
More specifically, she's not listed under 1990 Graduates, because it's true that she could have made up the credits many years later. preceding unsigned comment by 152.163.100.133 (talk • contribs) 22:25, 11 May 2006 (UTC)
I did notice that User:205.188.116.199 listed Esquire, GQ, and Oprah, in one of their edit comments, but there is no link I can find at the respective web pages, nor a specific issue listing that could be checked at a library, that confirms the information they want to add. The only pages that say she did not graduate are trivia lists based on IMDB info, which we all know can, and often do, include errors. —MJBurrage 15:23, 11 May 2006 (UTC)
It came directly from the horse's mouth in an article in LADIES HOME JOURNAL where Wynonna, Naomi, and Ashley were featured. She, herself, clarified it there that it was an error that was perpetuated by journalists/publicists. Here's one mention of it from google (link removed). Now go to the library to get that article.  :) preceding unsigned comment by 64.12.116.133 (talk • contribs) 22:04, 11 May 2006 (UTC)
For you to add disputed information—especially about a living person—you need to cite the specific source. A website that says it knows something, based on someone’s memory, from some unspecified issue of a magazine, is hearsay. You need a link to a Ladies Home Journal page with the information, or a copy of the issue itself. In which case you need to add the citation to the end of the article.
Posts to bulletin boards and Usenet, or messages left on blogs, are never acceptable as primary or secondary sources.
See Wikipedia:Citing sources and Wikipedia:Reliable sources for details. —MJBurrage 04:06, 12 May 2006 (UTC)

Based on User:64.12.116.133’s mention of Ladies’ Home Journal (March 1998) in their edit comment (but not in the article notes), I tracked down the article. It comments, “A high-ranking student at the University of Kentucky, she did not graduate…”. Said information has been added to the article with proper footnoting. —MJBurrage 14:29, 12 May 2006 (UTC)

Well, I assume you are referring to Image:Ashley Judd head.jpg. I think Image:Ashley Judd podium.jpg looks pretty nice, and you can move that to the top if you wish. --Rob 20:29, 5 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] AIDS efforts

Well, I'm not sure if this will work or if Ashley will read it, but I have a slight problem with the fact that she is making a big deal about her efforts here for AIDS (which I, in fact, do think is a big deal), but I really would like to see her encourage donation to Hepatitis C groups, which has reached epidemic proportions in this country, causing pain, suffering and death. I thought she might be interested in this topic in that her mother was lucky enough to be "cured" of Hepatitis C, but had to leave her career on the stage in order to get better. I don't know how she did it, but that is something else I would like to hear. Thanks.
