Austin J. Murphy

Austin John Murphy (Born June 17, 1927) was a Democrat member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Pennsylvania.

Austin J. Murphy was born in North Charleroi, Pennsylvania, and grew up in New London, Connecticut. He graduated from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA in 1949, and the University of Pittsburgh in 1952. He served in the United States Marine Corps from 1944 to 1946. He served as assistant district attorney in Washington County, Pennsylvania, from 1956 to 1957. He was member of the Pennsylvania State House of Representatives from 1959 and 1971, and a member of the Pennsylvania State Senate from 1971 to 1977. He was a delegate to the Democratic National Conventions in 1984 and 1988. He was elected in 1976 as a Democrat to the 95th and to the eight succeeding Congresses (January 3, 1977-January 3, 1995). He was not a candidate for reelection in 1994.
