The three Australian services inherited their rank structure from their British counterparts. The insignia used to identify these ranks are also generally similar to those used in the British Armed Forces.

- The Chief of the Defence Force is the only officer at O-10 (full General or equivalent).
- The Vice Chief of the Defence Force, the chiefs of the the three services and the Chief of Capability Development executive are all appointed at O-9 (Lieutenant General equivalent).
