From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Avendar: the Crucible of Legends is a DikuMUD/Merc (MUD)/ROM (MUD) MUD with an epic fantasy theme. The MUD gameplay consists of roleplaying an adventurer in an original fantasy world, collecting treasure and gaining new powers, often coming into conflict with hostile creatures or engaging fellow players in player versus player combat.
[edit] Distinguishing Features
- No stock MUD areas are used.
- There has been extensive development of the historical and cultural setting for the game.
- A system of "Houses" (Cabals) encourages player-characters to compete over possession of magical artifacts known as The Stones of Power.
- Frequent customized interactions and quests from gamemasters on the Avendar staff (known as immortals) for player-characters judged to have exceptional, well-played roles.
[edit] History of the Game
The development of Avendar began in the fall of 1997, headed by Matt Wallace ("Ashur"), Brandon Downey ("Jolinn"), and Thane Williams ("Iandir") with a handful of other veterans from MUDs such as The Carrionfields and Darkmists. The game opened to the public for beta-testing in January 1998, and has been in operation ever since.
Since 2006, work has been underway to develop a new codebase for Avendar, and the project has been tentatively titled "Avendar 2.0".
