Avida Dollars is an up-and-coming Sheffield band formed in March 2005 led by Joseph Armstrong on vocals and guitar, with Ben on bass guitar, Tom on vocals and keyboards, Jack on rhythm guitar and Luke on drums. They play rock and are known for their energetic live performances.
[edit] History
When he lived in Bahamas, Joseph formed a band with classmate Jordan named "A Spiny Norman". Soon after, Joseph left the island for the United Kingdom, where he continued the band (under the name Avida Dollars) with classmates Ben and Luke in Sheffield. Together, they wrote and recorded two demos, the second one with Alan Smyth who has recorded other Sheffield groups such as Pulp, Arctic Monkeys, The Long Blondes and Smokers Die Younger.
In August 2006, Tom Christensen, friend and co-founder of Joseph in the experimental pop group Fat Fuck, joined the band on guitar, synthesizer, handclaps, maracas with birds painted on them and tambourine. This new dynamic to the band started to get the band noticed and became a regular band to play on the Sheffield circuit.
This lineup of the group recorded a demo in December at Pirate Studios, where Sheffield group Champion Kickboxer recorded their album 'Perforations'. The new songs began to capture the minds of audiences with just the titles alone: 'Put It In Your Mouth, Motherfucker', 'Blood Mountain' and 'Looks Like A Steven To Me'.
