Back in the Day (Ahmad song)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"Back in the Day" is a 1994 West Coast hip hop single by Ahmad. The song is a nostalgic remembrance of childhood and young teenage years, from a somewhat jaded adult perspective. "Back in the Day" was Ahmad's only major hit single, making it to #26 on the US pop chart, #19 on th US R&B chart, and #1 on the US rap chart. It was the anchor of his 1995 album, Ahmad, and is RIAA certified gold.
The song's chorus "back in the days when I was young/I'm not a kid anymore/but some days/I sit and wish I was a kid again", became an oft-repeated verse, practically a cliché, in hip-hop music, hip hop culture, and related fields: for example, R&B singer Brandy Norwood appropriated the chorus for a remix of her 1998 single "Sittin' on Top of the World". Critically Acclaimed also emulates "Back in the Day" in their song "Flashback," which features the same sample.
"Back in the Day" is based around a sample of Teddy Pendergrass' "Love TKO". The song is produced by Kendal Gordy, son of Motown founder Berry Gordy. Ahmad also did the underground classic "Come Widdit" with Ras Kass and Saafir which was produced by Sway and Tech, and the single "Only if You Want It" for the Pump Your Fist soundtrack which was produced by David "Big Dave" Jacobson and Ahmad for Jones,Inc.
A remix of "Back in the Day" is featured on the soundtrack of the 1999 film "The Wood".
Swedish rapper Timbuktu made a cover of the song "Back in the Day". It is called "För Länge Sen" which is the translation for back in the days in Swedish. Timbuktu uses almost the same beat but on the track there are guest appearance by Chords and Supreme (Looptroop). The track can be found on Timbuktus album "The Båtten Is Nådd" released on JuJu Records in 2003
