The Badger State Trail is a newly renovated stretch of abandoned railway corridor leading from the state line to Madison, WI. Cities along the way, from south to north, Monroe, WI, near Monticello, WI, and Belleville, WI. Near Monticello, the trail passes through the 980-foot-long, about 120 year old, unlit Stewert Tunnel. A state trail pass is required to use the trail, and the path is monitored by Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources rangers. The Badger State Trail connects to the Capitol City Trail in Madison, and the Jane Addams Trail at the state line (leading to Freeport, IL) whic will connect to the proposed 500-mile Grand Illinois Trail System. Along the way, the Badger State Trail connects to the Sugar River Trail in Monticello, and the Tri-County "Cheese" Trail in Monroe.
