[edit] About Bahria

Pakistan Navy with its inherent flair for disciplined training and over 30 years of experience in the field of education had a vision to help build an educated and prosperous Pakistan in the 21st century. The vision was to consolidate all its efforts to create an education system that would be capable of providing state of the art facilities for quality education to the population of Pakistan without any prejudice of class, creed, color or domicile.

This vision became a reality on 7 Feb 2000, when Bahria University was established through the Presidential Ordinance No. V of 2000.Bahria University today is a multi-campus university with its headquarters at Islamabad. The constituent units of the university are spread at Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad. These include Bahria Institutes of Management and Computer Sciences at Karachi and Islamabad, the Institute of Professional Psychology at PNS SHIFA Karachi, Pakistan Naval Academy Karachi and PN War College Lahore.

The University is planned to run on self-financing basis without depending heavily on the Government funds. Its campuses were built with state of the art facilities, high tech computer/electronic laboratories and well-stocked libraries with free Internet access. The faculties of Earth & Environmental Sciences and Economics are also located within the premises of these two institutes at Islamabad and Karachi. The institute of Professional Psychology is located in renovated premises at PNS Shifa Karachi, well suited to the needs of modern teaching facilities in Psychology.

In order to update our laboratory facilities and provide best library setup, our new building known as Bahria University Headquarters, is engineered to accommodate High-Tech Computers and Advanced Applications Laboratories at Islamabad, adjacent to existing setup. Its four floors will accommodate the Cafeteria and Library along with offices and lecture theaters. The cafe serves as an excellent venue to do anything from snacking and slacking to full scale meals, pimping and picking up girls.

A disciplined and peaceful academic environment is maintained at these campuses to facilitate learning and timely completion of degree programs. The emergence of Bahria University on the educational scene of Pakistan is a relatively recent phenomenon but the progress it has made so far is phenomenal. The University, however, does not want to rest on its achievements and is looking ahead for further expansion to be at par with renowned universities.

The achievements of the Bahria University over the years are indicative of dedication, hard work and expertise of the team that has constantly been serving the cause of better quality higher education in Pakistan.

The resources of the University devoted to the fulfillment of the mission, aimed at turning out value-oriented professionals and scholars, capable of creating new horizons on the glorious foundations of oriental heritage of knowledge. The University provides an academic and enabling environment, which is founded on the old philosophical belief that the ultimate reality can be reached through pure reason and intellectual pursuits. It is an endeavor to enliven the academic tradition of the educational institutions of the golden era of Muslim civilization and therefore an attempt at achieving glories through imbibing the present day rising curve of knowledge.

Bahria University became the first university in Pakistan to offer free Wi-Fi Hot Spots to the students. It also struck a deal with Intel and Acer to grant every student a low-price Acer notebook. For this purpose the university signed a contract to buy and distribute 5000 Acer Aspire notebooks. This deal however turned out to be a nigtmare for the university, as the Units it purchased didn't get a positive response from the students.

Bahria University - Integrated Scientific & Industrial Software

Computer has ushered a revolution in science and information technology. Tremendous progress has been made in computer hardware in terms of speed and memory. However the computer software has not kept pace with the hardware for its proper utilization. Some of the developing countries are playing a dynamic role in computer software development. Their achievements have become possible through the participation of giant industrial establishments with a large team of programmers and project managers. In this process they have established a basis for future technological revolution in their countries.

In Pakistan however an Infrastructure does not exist which could provide the basis for scientific and engineering software activities. In the series of conferences held in Pakistan, participants have pointed out the lack of government/private sector support in this area, together with the shortage of appropriate human resources.

Experts spoke about the poor quality of software product, which cannot be advocated in the international market.

There is a general consensus on the awareness that something should be done by professionals in public or private sectors to assess the role of this activity as a potential exchange, easier for the country and for opening up further avenues for the employment of professionals. With the view, Bahria University has decided to take an initiative in this area and move forward for the establishment of BU-ISIS.

Objectives of BU-ISIS:

  • To establish the business of scientific and industrial software development and to contribute to the national economy.
  • To promote the profile of local professionals, researchers and experts in the international market.
  • To establish links and joint ventures with foreign and Pakistani companies for the promotion of Scientific & Industrial software development.
  • To undertake projects from national and international clients and generate funds to augment research and development activities.
  • To undertake projects from national and international clients and generate funds to augment research and development activities.
  • To publish operating manuals, instruction guides and copyright activity for the software developed by the BU-ISIS.
  • To provide testing and validation services including post design technical support.
  • To conduct international seminars conferences and meetings in the relevant area of research.
  • To identify and suggest cost-effective strategies which provide optimal utilization of available resources to local industries and scientific organizations.
