Baldev Raj Chopra

Baldev Raj Chopra (B.R. Copra) (born April 22, 1914 in Ludhiana, Punjab) is an Indian film director and producer. His brother is successful director and producer Yash Chopra. Chopra is a director and producer of Bollywood movies and Indian television sitcoms.
An M.A from Lahore University in English Literature, his interest in films started him off as a film journalist. After the partition he came to Delhi and then moved to Bombay. His first film Karwat was a flop. In 1951, he directed Afsana.
In 1955, he formed his own production house B.R Films. His first film for this production house was Naya Daur which went to court over its actress Madhubala not shooting because of her father being upset about his daughter being linked to the lead actor of the film Dilip Kumar.
His foray into television led to Mahabharat, one of the most successful TV serials in Indian television history until that time. He wrote the screenplay for the film Baghban (2003) which was directed by his son Ravi Chopra.
He is the recipient of the Dadasaheb Phalke Award 1998.
