BAMN
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
By Any Means Necessary or BAMN is a left-wing civil rights activist group active in the U.S. states of Michigan and California. The full name is the Coalition to Defend Affirmative Action, Integration & Immigration Rights and Fight for Equality By Any Means Necessary. The name come from the slogan By any means necessary.
BAMN activism has included legal challenges against the Michigan Civil Rights Initiative, rallies, protests, and confrontational activism. BAMN has received considerable media attention in Michigan for its role in exposing instances of racially-targeted voter fraud committed by backers of the initiative. The group led a campaign to expose the activities of anti-affirmative action forces in Michigan, which led to a court ruling that anti-affirmative action groups had misled voters by telling potential petition signers that their state ballot proposal would protect affirmative action when in reality, it would end such programs. [1][2] Luke Massie and Shanta Driver are the national co-chairs for BAMN.
BAMN's affiliations include United for Equality and Affirmative Action (UEAA), the National Women's Rights Organizing Coalition (NWROC), and the Trotskyist Revolutionary Workers League (RWL).
Opponents of the group have criticized BAMN for tactics allegedly used during its rallies such as verbally assaulting people who disagree with their political program. The group has also been criticized for busing in students from the Metro Detroit area to BAMN protests.
The American Civil Liberties Union has reported that the FBI has investigated BAMN for potential involvement in unspecified "terrorist activities." According to the FBI, the group's protests were simply discussed in a meeting about terrorist activities.[3][4]
