Battle of Dyutsaznamart was a battle when Hayk, patriarch of the Armenians, crushed the armies of the Assyrian tyrant Bel in the battle of Dyutsaznamart on the banks of the Hayots-Dzor river southern of the city of Van, and laid the foundations of the future Armenian state named after him Hayq. Hayk built the fortress of Haykaberd at the site of Dyutsaznamart, as well as Haykashen in the county Harq of the province Tauruberan. Hayk Nahapet was the founder of the dynasty of the first patriarchs and kings of ancient Armenia and the source of many ancient Armenian aristocratic houses.
[edit] Background
On the site of the battle he built a villa and called it Hayk' on account of his victory; for that reason the district is now called Hayots' dzor. [1] But the hill where Bel with his warriors fell Hayk called Gerezmans; today it is called Gerezmank. [2] But Hayk embalmed the corpse of Bel with drugs, he says, and ordered it to be taken to Hark and to be buried in a high place in the view of his wives and sons. Now our country is called Hayk after the name of our ancestor Hayk.[3]
