Julius Jacob von Haynau | Józef Bem |
The Battle of Temesvár (Romanian: Timişoara) was fought on August 9, 1849 between Austria and Hungarian insurgents. The Austrians were led by Julius Jacob von Haynau, while the Hungarians were led by Józef Bem who was arrived in the last instance from Transsylvania. The Austrians were victorious.
The Hungarians had only their Southern-Hungarian division here, which was a little bit more numerous than the Austrian side, but lacked experience and good equipment. Henryk Dembinski, the earlier leader of this Hungarian division retreated from Szeged just before the arrival of the army of Julius Jacob von Haynau, where the Hungarians had prepared pretty good defence lines. Henryk Dembinski was removed and Louis Kossuth asked Józef Bem to come and take the leadership. The Hungarians were staying at the stronghold of Temesvár (Romanian: Timişoara), which belonged to the Austrians when they were attacked from the castle too. The Hungarians did well for a while, but when Józef Bem accidentally fell from his horse they couldn't hold the Austrian cavalry.
