The Battle of the Chinese Farm was fought in October 1973 after the Egyptian 3rd Army crossed the Suez canal. The Israeli Defense Force counterattacked to secure its bridgehead across the Suez Canal and tried to isolate the 3rd Army.
The battle's name comes from its location: an abandoned experimental agricultural station previously sponsored by the Japanese. Israeli personnel mistook Japanese characters on machinery for Chinese, hence the name "Chinese Farm".
Egyptians forces were pushed back sufficiently to allow a secure Israeli supply line to their forces attacking on the west bank of the Suez Canal. The subsequent envelopment of the Egyptian Third Army led to the Egyptian government calling for an immidetae U.N. ceasefire, thus terminating the war.
