First of all, Wicher and Gryf were slow (Wicher being also obsolete). They were not suitable for convoy escort role, which was what for the rest of the Polish fleet was withdrawn. Secondly, the Polish plan Rurka was a decent idea and Gryf was built specifically for that purpose - to lay mines close to the Polish shore. If it wasn't for Łomidze's panick...
