[edit] Strasbourg ISU day & Yuri's Night 2006 Planning
12th of April is celebrated around the world as a special day dedicated to the spirit and adventure of space travel and activities. Yuri's Night events every year map an orbiting party in honour of Yuri Gagarin, the 1st Space Shuttle flight and the 12th is also the founding day of ISU.
This year the celebrations are coming to Strasbourg, France! The preparations are underway and the aim of this article is to update the Local Organizing Committee on the progress and status but also log the lessons learnt/better approaches for a bigger version of the celebrations in the coming years.
Hello Bee!--Beex 15:16, 22 March 2006 (UTC) [Paul Reilly]
[edit] 2006 Events
The current plan is as follows:
11th April Afternoon - Open event in town for children, enthusiasts other interested people. --> See point (1)
12th April Afternoon (4/5 pm) - ISU Day celebrations: BBQ at ISU for students/families and staff. --> (2)
12th April Evening (10pm onwards) - Yuri's night club party - at Club JAVA or similar venue - including DJ sets, live music (volunteers from ISU?) or any other famous act? As a warm up: I have a yuri's night special game ready. --> (3)
Why is this a multi-event celebration?
- In line with the motto and agenda of Space Generation and Yuri's night, involving the public outside the space community is essential in this celebration of human space flight.
- This would help gain a similar support as 'physics on stage' the Students who attended this event were extremely interested and motivated by the talks and demonstrations given.
- Many of our Masters students have kids and families this year. Such committments may mean that a club party is not possible for them to attend. Hence, a BBQ would give a good chance for them and their families (we are going to input fun things for kids too!)
- Club celebrations are the traditional way of celebrating yuri's night, these would be weblinked and broadcasted across all the parties to make a non-stop world space party.

- Please write "DONE" after each task when finished along with your signature
[edit] (1) Open event in town - 11th of April
Options:
- Observatoire - however, response required from Dr Koppen + permissions would need to be sought and need to get volunteers or staff at the observatoire to commit to tours/ use of premises, etc. = complicated
- Cafe Brant or other social event - need to put the space context into, would require more publicity as we want it to be assessible to public and other university students
- Cinema Night at the Odyssey European Cinema Centre (next to VOX): Can mingle in cafe and have a projection of '2001: a Space Odyssey' at the Odyssey. Central location, great ambience and hopefully a good place. --Beex 15:04, 22 March 2006 (UTC) [Paul Reilly]
Tasks:
-
- Need to finalize Venue--Bee 21:51, 27 March 2006 (UTC)Paul and Bee checked 3 potential venues (Observatoire is not that convinient)
- Need to book Venue
- Publicity - prepare poster/flyer. Matt to update flyer - word of mouth, newspaper article, radio announcement, flyers and posters by a tram stop or near by universities,
- Commit what is going to happen: talks, presentation of what tp topics are? Bee to ask a couple of Strasbourg contacts to talk.
- Need to talk to the Odyssey - are they open? are they booked? Have a space theme there?
[edit] (2) ISU day BBQ event - afternoon, 12th of April
We all finish TP day early that day - staff and students pay a small fee (similar to normal rates - 5 euros per person), there shall be BBQ food and other non-vegetarian food. Chris Fenton, our experienced BBQ chef who has accepted to do the BBQ, also suggested that the number of people he can handle is less than 40. This calls for an additional demand on food, but we can provide alternatives.
During the BBQ, We hope to:
-
- Have a speech from President Simpson - Bee to email President Simpson
- Reading of message from Bob Richards and Peter Diamandis - for ISU
- Nikolai to narrate interesting stories - Bee to email Nikolai - --Bee 23:36, 22 March 2006 (UTC)DONE - emailed on 22 March 06
