Belle Vernon, Pennsylvania

Belle Vernon is a borough located in Fayette County, Pennsylvania along the Monongahela River. The population was 1,211 at the 2000 census. The town is called Lower Belle Vernon by locals, due to its location in a river valley. This is to distinguish it from North Belle Vernon on the neighboring hillside and the Belle Vernon shopping centers in Rostraver Township. The town is served by the Belle Vernon Area School District, which is actually also centered in Rostraver.

(40.126936, -79.868285)According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.8 km² (0.3 mi²). 0.7 km² (0.3 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.1 mi²) of it (16.13%) is water.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 1,211 people, 612 households, and 288 families residing in the borough. The population density was 1,798.3/km² (4,647.4/mi²). There were 716 housing units at an average density of 1,063.3/km² (2,747.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the borough was 96.12% White, 2.15% African American, 0.08% Native American, 0.41% Asian, 0.25% from other races, and 0.99% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.91% of the population.
There were 612 households out of which 17.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 32.7% were married couples living together, 9.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 52.9% were non-families. 48.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 30.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 1.96 and the average family size was 2.89.
In the borough the population was spread out with 17.1% under the age of 18, 7.8% from 18 to 24, 25.1% from 25 to 44, 21.1% from 45 to 64, and 28.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 45 years. For every 100 females there were 80.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 75.8 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $18,068, and the median income for a family was $36,094. Males had a median income of $22,434 versus $20,950 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $12,919. About 5.8% of families and 16.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 21.7% of those under age 18 and 23.1% of those age 65 or over.
