Benjys
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Benjys was a chain of sandwich shops in the United Kingdom. Most of the sixty branches were located in London and the South East of England, with some in major cities outside the South East, such as Leeds, Manchester and Birmingham. At one point, it operated a van-based model in which franchises delivered sandwiches to offices, particularly in business parks, that are generally not well served by venues that sell food intended to be eaten at lunchtime.
The first branch of Benjys was opened by Paul Benjamin husband of Bettina Benjamin at the time now divorced 1989 in Islington, London. The Benjamin family sold the thriving business for around £40 million in 2000. Benjys employed over 650 people and offered a range of hot food, fresh fruit, snacks, desserts and bakery items in its stores.
On Monday 5 February 2007, Benjys went into receivership for the second time in 6 months, due to a large debt estimated at £22.9 million. Bailiffs were sent to most of the shops to change the locks. By Wednesday 7 February, all branches of Benjys were closed, the main production factory in Bow was sold to Pret a Manger, and franchisees were given two weeks to sort out replacement vehicles for their sandwich delivery businesses. The Benjys website appears to have been taken down and all the stores and distribution centres have closed down.
