Berner High School
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Now known as Berner Middle School, Berner High School was the original high school for Massapequa. With its mascot the "Berner Bison," it rivaled the Massapequa High School for some time during the 1960s and 70's before it was turned into a middle school. Remnants of a high school track, quality football/soccer field, and even tennis courts are still visible today- most of which have lacked maintenance for more than ten years. The only current athletic area that is worthy to speak of is the North soccer field, often utilized by the Long Island Junior Soccer League for the Massapequa Soccer Club's travel teams. The administration has made attempts in recent years to improve the south field, though it is often torn up due to constant use by middle school students during the soccer and football seasons. It is also used heavily for adult leagues, and 'un-sanctioned' soccer games during the weekends.
There is currently no talk of returning the middle school's status to a high school, though it is possible that many of the schools in the Massapequa Union Free School District system may exchange uses, due to the rising adolescent population in both Massapequa and Massapequa Park.
