66.167.139.24 05:54, 24 Oct 2004 (UTC): I noticed User:Lowellian reversed edits which had re-established this as a redirection for Big Ten Conference. Does anyone else agrees with this approach?

I was the one who made the change User:Lowellian reverted, based on the state of wikipedia and google at the time. Every article but one within Wikipedia that referenced Big Ten meant to link to the conference, and several checks with google indicated that by multiple orders of magnitude Big Ten refers to the athletic conference and not a list of studios. Even searches such as "Big Ten" movie and "Big Ten" studio produces articles about the conference.

I had preserved the text about the studios in a new Big Ten (movie studios) article, and created legitimate links to the new article within several studio articles. The reversion done by User:Lowellian failed to revert several of articles I updated. As part of the reversion User:Lowellian did add a couple of new "see also" references to the movie studio version of Big Ten.

Does anyone else agree with User:Lowellian about prioritizing the movie studios over the athletic conference? I will see if User:Lowellian wants to comment...

First, let me discuss this page. I am not prioritizing movie studios over the conference. The phrase "Big Ten Conference" unambiguously refers to the conference, whereas "Big Ten" could refer either to movie studios or to the conference. I think we can both agree that the article about the athletics conference belongs at "Big Ten Conference". So what about the article "Big Ten"? Well, you seem to want to make it a redirect to Big Ten. But then how will anyone who's searching for the movie studios find the movie studios page? Did you notice that there's a clear disambiguation message at the top of the page that lets users who are looking for the athletic conference follow a link to the page about the conference?

66.167.139.24 08:49, 24 Oct 2004 (UTC): The evidence from Google and Wikipedia suggests that Big Ten is practically an unambiguous reference to the conference. So both Big Ten Conference and Big Ten should get to to the same article. Big Ten (movie studios) (or Big Ten movie studios or something similar) can then cover the movie business-specific notion you've introduced. Either one is fine with me. The Big Ten conference page could then have a clear disambiguation message to let readers get to the list of studios.

Second, your method. (1) You copied and pasted this page to "Big Ten (movie studios)". This is against Wikipedia policy: you can move pages, but you don't copy-and-paste because that destroys edit histories. (2) Since you turned this page into a redirect to "Big Ten Conference", how was anyone going to the page "Big Ten" looking for information about movie studios supposed to find their way to the article "Big Ten (movie studios)"?

Since you brought up the subject of policy, you are probably also aware of the code of honor expectation you didn't meet to fix the newly mis-directed links you made when you took over Big Ten for the movie studio list?

I have changed Big Ten to redirect to Big Ten Conference. I have been disambiguating links to Big Ten for months now, and not one has referred to anything other than the Big Ten Conference. In fact, there are on average one or two new links to Big Ten a day that should link to Big Ten Conference. I have added an other uses tag to the top of the Big Ten Conference page that points to Big Ten (disambiguation). --Terryn3 12:20, 3 August 2006 (UTC)

There is no such concept as the "Big Ten movie studios". It's not a term used in the movie industry or the popular press. Therefore, if someone refers to the Big Ten, they are either referring to the athletic conference or to something which has not become notable enough to be covered in Wikipedia.
