The Stag and Hounds was reportedly used as a hunting lodge by Henry VIII and Elizabeth I and an elm tree outside it (the stump of which was finally removed in 2004) was said to mark the centre of Windsor Forest. Binfield is most famous for being the childhood home of the 18th century poet, Alexander Pope. Also, much of George Orwell's 1939 novel Coming Up for Air takes place here.
