[edit] Personality
Blackbeard is first portrayed as laid-back and easy-going, but is much more sinister in nature. He is shown to be beyond morality, as he believes that only fate and destiny determine one's worth, and justifies killing the weak because of this. While one of Whitebeard's crewmen, Teach had assassinated a crew member purely for the Devil Fruit in his possession (The Yami Yami no Mi). This spectacle not only showed his brutal nature but also his nature to do what's necessary to obtain anything he pleases. Strangely, he also appreciates dreams as much as fate, evident as how he gives an inspiring speech to Luffy about this.
Blackbeard is often underestimated for his lack of intelligence. On the contrary, he has formed a meticulous plan in hopes of becoming the successor to the late Pirate King Gol D. Roger. He has also memorized the appearance of the Yami Yami Fruit in hopes of finding it.
[edit] History
Blackbeard's early history is unknown, but at some point he studied different Devil Fruits, and joined the Whitebeard Pirates in hopes of finding the Yami Yami no Mi. He fought Shanks and gave him three scars across his right eye. The events leading up to this remains unknown. Shanks later states at the time he was not being careless. To keep a low profile, Blackbeard did not allow himself to become famous nor take up positions, keeping his true strength a secret until the time was right.
After decades on the ship, Blackbeard discovered Sachi, the former Fourth Division Commander of the Whitebeard Pirates, had the fruit he was searching for and murdered him so that he could take the devil fruit for himself, thus prompting his departure from the crew, and Ace's hunt for him. After leaving Whitebeard's crew, he formed a small crew of extremely strong pirates, and pillaged the Drum Kingdom, leaving its king, Wapol, to flee.
[edit] Jaya Arc
After Luffy defeated Crocodile in Alabasta, Lafitte tried to nominate Blackbeard to become one of the Shichibukai to take Crocodile's place, but in order to be accepted, Blackbeard must first build up a fearsome reputation.
Blackbeard happened to be in Jaya, at the same time Luffy was. Both Luffy and Blackbeard seem to strike up a rivalry when they nearly got into a fight over how they like or dislike one of the island tavern's food.[1] However, not long after that he'd given Luffy a friendly speech about how pirates will never stop dreaming.[2] Despite their similarities (and comical contrasts), it was revealed in the Jaya arc that Blackbeard was looking to take out a strong pirate to make a name for himself - and he chose Luffy after learning of his 100 million Belli bounty at the time. He however failed to catch them as they were blasted aside by the knock-up stream which took the Straw Hats to Skypiea.
[edit] Recent chapters
After the events at Enies Lobby were publicized, Blackbeard and his crew once again decided to actively pursue the Straw Hats. However, Portgas D. Ace caught up to Blackbeard just as he was about to set sail off Banaro Island. Before the fight would break out, Blackbeard details his plan to Ace; he wants to become the Pirate King. He thinks Whitebeard's time is over, and will gather enough power to make this true, and wants to join the Shichibukai to get the World Government to his side. His next step would be eliminating Luffy to gain a formidable bounty. Ace, however, turns down his offer, and tells Teach that Luffy is his little brother. During the fight, Blackbeard confessed that he killed Sachi, the former Fourth Division Commander in Whitebeard crew, in order to get the Devil Fruit that he had been targeting for so long. He then showed his "new" power that allows him to create darkness.
He demonstrates his power by beginning to beat on Ace, and shows his Fruit allows him to nullify Ace's Devil Fruit powers. Blackbeard makes a last offer for a place in his crew for Ace, but Ace refuses to bend under his might. He creates a gigantic ball of fire, Teach responds by creating his own gigantic warp of darkness, while laughing and comments: The Sun or the Darkness?! Only one can win!!! They clash together, leaving an unknown outcome. The last we see is Ace's hat lying on the ground.
[edit] Powers and abilities
Blackbeard has proven to be an extremely strong pirate. He possesses incredible natural strength, evident of his massive build, and similar endurance as he shrugged off one of Ace's attacks. He once fought Red-Haired Shanks and gave him the scars on his left eye, noteworthy as he had not eaten his Devil Fruit yet. Blackbeard has eaten the Devil Fruit Yami Yami No Mi (Dark Dark Fruit). With it, he can become and control darkness, and also manipulate gravity. Teach demonstrates that the "darkness" is a void which devours anything, able to pull in (much in the manner of a black hole) and crush the surrounding town into a pile of wood. Due to the Yami Yami no Mi's gravitational ability, Blackbeard, unlike every other Logia user, cannot let attacks simply pass through him, meaning he takes damage like any human would, and perhaps even suffering more than others would. However, Blackbeard states that the risk this presents is well worth the advantages the fruit bestows upon him. The second, and most frightening power of the fruit is to nullify other Devil Fruit abilities through physical contact, allowing Teach to physically hit Ace. Teach states that this is because the Yami Yami no Mi truly holds the power of the devil.
[edit] The Letter D
Blackbeard's real name is Marshall D. Teach, indicating a possible connection to the other "D." characters (Monkey D. Luffy, Portgas D. Ace, Gol D. Roger, Jaguar D. Saulo, Monkey D. Garp, Monkey D. Dragon), as well as a connection to the cryptic "Will of D".
[edit] Manga/Anime influences
Historically, Blackbeard was as fearsome a pirate as he is portrayed by Eiichiro Oda in One Piece. Blackbeard's pirate ship was discovered in Beaufort, North Carolina in 1996, and possibly influenced Oda when he began One Piece in 1997, evidenced by Oda's statements that Blackbeard was his favorite historical pirate.
Marshall D. Teach's name is partially taken from the real Blackbeard's supposed name, Edward Teach, which possibly could have led to Whitebeard's name, Edward Newgate.
[edit] Trivia
- Many of One Piece's villains are given distinct laughs. Blackbeard follows this tradition by starting his laughs with a "Zeh" sound (i.e. Zeh ha ha ha ha!)
