Ces armes furent celles du monastère clunisien de Romainmôtier à partir du XIVème siècle. La clef et l'épée, emblèmes de saint Pierre et saint Paul, patrons de la ville, se retrouvent sur le blason de Cluny . Ces armes ont été adoptées par la ville au XVIème siècle.
