[edit] "French Landing"
The article describes the town of "French Landing" as "said to be on the Mississippi River and on "Highway 35," characteristics which match (but do not uniquely identify) the real town of Prairie du Chien."
However, I believe the characteristics more precisely match French Island and La Crosse, WI. In the excerpt found at the Random House site a few names of places alone point to this area.
Names of places in the book similar to areas around La Crosse, WI and French Island:
French Landing, WI: First and foremost the name alone is very close to French Island, WI which was named for the first settlers to live there (who were French-Canadian) An Article with information regarding the settlement of French Island, WI
Tamarack, WI: Tamarack Road is a bit east of La Crosse, and a short distance from County Road O (which could be associated with County Oo described in the excerpt). Yahoo Map of Tamarack Rd. near CTY RD O
The BNSF Railroad: Runs north through La Crosse and actually borders the Mississippi right by French Island Yahoo Map of BNSF Railroad near French Island
Kingsland Brewing Company: What is now City Brewing in La Crosse, the reference fits with the statements "Old-Time Lager" as Old Style Lager was originally brewed in La Crosse, and the reference to the "world's largest six pack" being that the same world's largest six pack is still located here. An Article about the World's Largest Six Pack
I can get some more pictures for further references found in just the excerpt alone, if anyone would like?
