[edit] M54B30
The M54B30 is a 3.0 L (2979 ccm) successor of the 2.8 L BMW M52. Bore remains the same at 84 mm, but stroke is increased 5.6 mm to 89.6 mm. Power is 231 hp (168 kW) while torque is 221 ft.lbf (290 Nm).
It is an all-aluminum engine (block and DOHC heads) with cast steel cylinder liners. It uses SFI fuel injection, has 4 valves per cylinder with VVT and features fracture-split forged steel connecting rods, a one-piece cast camshaft, and reinforced plastic intake manifold. It is produced in Steyr, Austria.
The M54B30 was on the Ward's 10 Best Engines list through 2001-2003.

[edit] S54B32
BMW S54 engine | |
---|---|
Manufacturer | BMW M GmbH |
Production | 2001– |
Predecessor | BMW S50 |
Class | Straight-6 |
Engine | 3.2 L (3246 cm³/132 in³) 252 kW, 365 Nm |
The S54B32 is a high-performance engine used in BMW M vehicles. It replaces the S50B32 engine of the E36 M3. Its block is made from cast steel rather than aluminum to achieve compactness. It is a 3.2 L (3246 ccm) engine; bore is 87 mm and stroke is 91 mm. Power output is 338 hp (252 kW) at 7900 rpm with 269 ft.lbf (365 Nm) market of torque at 4900 rpm with an 8000 rpm redline. This engine has the second-highest specific output of any production naturally aspirated piston engine. These performance numbers apply only to non-US versions of this engine, as the US version of this engine required some modifications (such as a close-coupled catalytic converter on the engine exhaust ports) and thus produced slightly less power at 333 hp (248 kW) and 262nbsp;ft.lbf (355 Nm).
The S54 won the International Engine of the Year award overall for 2001, and also claimed the "Best New Engine" that year as well as won the 3-4 L category for six straight years in a row from 2001 through 2006 - so far. The S54 was also on the Ward's 10 Best Engines list for 2002 through 2004.
The S54 used to be known as the Engine of Damocles because of the tendency of early production M3s to explode spectacularly at elevated engine speeds. BMW attempted to blame vehicle owners for the failures early on but eventually started replacing rod bearings, oil pumps, and whole engines under warranty.[citation needed] This fault was not actually a BMW problem, but a problem with the connecting rod bottom-end bearing shells that were supplied to BMW by a third party. Some of the bearing shells provided did not meet BMW's specifications.[citation needed]. This problem was fully corrected by BMW on engines produced after 06/2003. A recall was done to retrofit all previously produced engines with the proper bearing shells.
As of 2006 the S54 continues to be used in the M Coupe and M Roadster
Applications:
- 2000-2006 E46
- 2001-2006 E46 M3
- 2001-2002 E36 BMW Z3 3.0 Roadster/Z3 M Roadster/Z3 3.0 Coupè/Z3 M Coupé
