Bokura ga Ita (僕等がいた Bokura ga Ita?) in English We Were There is the title of a fictional Japanese drama/romance story created by Yuuki Obata centering around the high school life of young freshman girl, Nanami Takahashi.

Bokura ga Ita originally began as a manga serialized in Betsucomi and the first collected volume was released on October 26, 2002. The anime is based upon this manga and began airing on July 3, 2006.

The manga is one of the most popular shoujo mangas in Japan having recently been on the Top 10 best selling manga in Japan for many months [verification needed]. Both the manga and anime are especially popular among teenage girls.[citation needed]

[edit] Plot

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

Bokura ga Ita is a story of a girl named Nana, who falls in love with the school's most popular guy, Yano. The anime begins as Nana starts school and meets Yano for the first time, after hearing about the rumors revolving around Yano. As the story continues, Nana discovers that Yano's ex-girlfriend had died in a car crash during the summer.

Finding out that Yano still indeed loves his ex-girlfriend, who also happens to have the name Nana, Nana tries to understand Yano and hopes that he will like her.Yano soon realizes he has become accustomed to Nana, no matter how hard he tries to keep her away. In the end, they begin dating.

Soon after, Nana realizes she can not deal with the burden of pretending to not care about Yano loving his ex-girlfriend, and breaks up with him. At the same time, Yano's best friend unexpectedly falls in love with Nana.

Take, Yano's best friend, because of his sister's lectures, begins to build the confidence in himself to fight over Nana, hoping that he will love her more than Yano did. This, then causes the mistrust between Take and Yano, putting best friend against best friend. As the story continues, Nana deals with the problem of choosing between Yano and his best friend.

Yamamoto Nana's death at the beginning of the anime it is revealed that Yano's girlfriend, Nana-san, died in a car crash the summer before. Later on in the plot, Yamamoto Yuri, Nana-san's sister reveals to Yano the secrets behind her death.

It turns out, the day of Yamamoto Nana's death was her birthday. The day before, she and Yano had a fight over something very minor and Yano decided to ignore her. Nana-san was upset by this for she felt that no girl should celebrate her birthday without their boyfriend. On the day of her death, she had been waiting for Yano to call and make up over their fight, but he never called. After leaving the cafe with her sister Yuri, for lunch, Nana-san's ex-boyfriend drove by them and told Nana-san happy birthday as well as offered her a ride in his car as a present. She agreed, believing that after telling Yano that she took a spin in her ex-boyfriend's car, Yano will worry about her more. Unfortunately, she and her ex-boyfriend died in that car.

The relationship between Yano Motoharu and Yamamoto Yuri At the beginning of the anime, it is only told that Yamamoto Yuri and Yano Motoharu know each other because Yano dated Yuri's sister.

It turns out, Yuri had always had a crush of Yano and she had sex with him right after her sister died. After that day, they stopped talking to each other and instead appeared to hate each other. After Nana and Yano break up, Yuri decides to take action and confesses to Yano that she truly loves him and that she understands him more than Nana does. Unfortunately for Yuri, she gets rejected.

[edit] Characters

Takahashi Nanami
Also known as Nana-chan is a girl who confesses her love too easily, pretty clumsy, and looks very cute. She takes a while to sort out her feelings, and is confused by what her heart tells her and what she knows to do. At the beginning of the anime, she decides that she will not become a lovestruck idiot over Yano like two thirds of the school, and fails as she becomes more and more curious of him.
Yano Motoharu
A popular boy at his school, and most girls have a crush on him. He is an extreme flirt, and he thinks about perverted things mainly, but most of all... he's a liar. He's cold at sometimes, and as Nana says, "He smiles so carelessly." He calls Nana "Takahashi."
Though he seems very cool and calm and very much a player, he has a hard time trusting women. His experiences with his ex-girlfriend and mother affect his trust towards women and causes him to have a strong want to have Nana by his side and to never leave him.
Takeuchi Masafumi
One of Yano's close friends. Unlike Yano, he's kind and considerate, and tends to offer advice to Nana when she's having problems with Yano. Take slowly relives his unmistakable feelings for he once loved Yano's girlfriend, and begins to do so with Nana as well.
Yamamoto Yuri
She is a quiet person, and very unsociable. It is later revealed that she, like many other girls, has a crush on Yano, even though her sister was Yano's girlfriend. Soon after it is discovered that she slept with Yano a few months after her sister's death. She feels that she was used but soon after believes that Yano felt pity for her or if better loved her as well.
Yamamoto Nana
Older sister of Yuri and Yano's first girlfriend. She is the exact opposite of Yuri, and has a similar personality to Nana-chan. She is called Nana-san by most people to distinguish her from Takahashi Nanami. She dies in a car crash with her ex-boyfriend a year before the series takes place.
Spoilers end here.
