Bon-gwan are the traditional clan lineages of Korean culture. The bon-gwan is the original locality for a family name in Korea, and usually adopts the hometown of the first ancestor. They are used to distinguish different lineages that bear the same family name. For example, large Kim clans include the Gyeongju Kim and Gimhae Kim. In these cases, Gyeongju and Gimhae are the respective bon-gwan of these families.
Families sharing a single bon-gwan typically trace their origin to a common ancestor.
