Borderfest

Borderfest is a Annual Festival held in Hidalgo County Texas. The first Borderfest ever held was in 1977. It is the largest and oldest music festival in South Texas; and includes foods from the US and Mexico, and sometimes from other countries from around the world.

BorderFest started in 1977 as a committee of the Hidalgo Chamber of Commerce to promote cultural, international and community spirit. The initial event was a small community festival lasting one day and drawing some 500 people. Today, the festival has grown to become a nationally recognized, award winning Heritage and Music festival attracting more than 50,000 people over five days.
Annually the festival Donates $10,000 to $20,000 for local scholarships. [1]

BorderFest’s mission is dedicated to cultural enrichment, arts education and heritage preservation in South Texas. BorderFest celebrates the diverse cultures that make the Rio Grande Valley unique and is an opportunity to share, preserve and showcase South Texas heritage through education, music, dance, cultural activities, and family fun."[1]

Borderfest 2007 was held from March 1-4 and saw a variety of music, people and foods. 2007 had appearances from Tracy Lawrence, Akon, Seirra, and much more. The theme 2007 was Irish Heritage.[2]
Among the festivities this year included special foods made by the Irish.

Borderfest 2006 was held on March 2-5 and was dedicated to the carnivals of the worlds and all the excitement and joy that one brings to a person.[2] Music appearances for 2006 included Juan Gabriel, DJ Kane, Angela Peterson, and Brad Paisley. [3] The number of participents that visited borderfest in 2006 was 65,000+ [citation needed]
