Bowbridge, Dundee

[edit] The area of Bowbridge
Bowbrige has recently been rewarded the dubious title of Britain's unhealthiest neighbourhood. The area is rows upon rows of bricked up tenements which sit check-by-jowl with multi-story blocks which have long been earmarked for demolition. Gangs of hooded youths roam the streets, drinking bottles of fortified wine by the neck and drawing on cigarettes. Every inch of every wall is scrawled with graffiti and desolate stretches of wasteland are strewn with dog mess, rotting mattresses and litter.
[edit] Statictics
Its residents spend on average, £486 a year on tobacco, a third have long term illness and only one in four takes part in active sport. It contrasts starkly with Cheam, in south London, which is the healthiest neighbourhood in Britain. The residents spend on average just £85 per year on tobacco, only 14% suffer from long term illness and almost 40% participate in sport.
[edit] The Hawthorns
One of the hubs of the area is the Hawthorns public house. According to local resident Benny, "The pub is the real community centre here. There's nothing to do except go to the pub. People get bored-they turn to drink, drugs and crime."
