A Brass Monkey is a cocktail consisting of equal parts light rum, dark rum, and orange juice. It is thus essentially a screwdriver with rum added instead of vodka.
Pulp-free orange juice is usually desirable for reasons of palatability, though freshly squeezed juice may also yield a good brass monkey. Dark rum is also preferable, since it is the mixing of the brown rum with the orange juice that produces the distinct brass-like coloration for which this drink is named.
[edit] Alternate meaning
An entirely different cocktail, often attributed to the Beastie Boys' song of the same name, consists of three parts malt liquor and one part Sunny Delight. Typically Olde English 800 or St. Ides is used, and always in the forty-ounce bottle. The first quarter to third of the bottle is consumed, and then topped off with Sunny D, capped, mixed, and drunk.
In the 1970s, a liquor company produced a pre-mixed drink with the name Brass Monkey, declaring it to have originated at a bar in the Far East. Another recipe includes Galliano floated on top of the cocktail, added by pouring it on the back of a spoon.
