Break of Reality

Break of Reality (BoR) is a cello rock band based in Rochester, New York, consisting of three cellists and drums. Many of their events are sponsored by the energy drink Red Bull.

Break of Reality was formed while the founding members were freshmen at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester. At the time of formation, the band consisted of only four cellists. Founding members Patrick Laird, Chris Thibdeau, Erin Keesecker, and Jeff Hood began to play together sparingly, and their investment of time quickly grew. Soon after, the members began to compose original music for their band. In December of 2003, the band had their first performance in a small classical venue at Eastman. The concert was well received by the audience.[citation needed] From this success, the group decided to continue with composing and set a goal for an album to be recorded during the summer of 2004.
During the spring semester of 2004, the band was in need of electric equipment for their cellos, but Thibdeau's enrollment into a conducting program at Eastman hindered the amount of performance and therefore the amount of profit. After he left the school and the band (to return again in October 2005) and was replaced by Franklin Keel, the band was able to perform more often and obtained the needed equipment. Their first performance with the new equipment, held in a coffee shop, was well-received.[citation needed] Also during the spring semester of 2004, the band also picked up drummer Ivan Trevino.
In the summer of 2004 Break of Reality recorded its first album, "Voiceless", in a small studio in New Jersey. Despite the fact that the only Break of Reality member performing on this album was cellist Patrick Laird, the band collectively released the album as their own. The album was released in October of that year and was a partial success[citation needed]. Eastman even offered to bus students to the first showing of their album. From these added fans, Break of Reality's fans formed the band's first mosh pit. Later, Franklin Keel left Break of Reality and was replaced by Andrew Larson, who left the band in October 2005. Break of Reality began to expand its number of performances per year, each time expanding their Rochester fan base.
In January of 2005, Frank Deblase from Rochester City News put Break of Reality on the front cover of the paper and wrote a two page article promoting the band and its new album. [1] The article in the paper was a breakthrough for the group and grabbed the attention of many more Rochester citizens as well as the Red Bull Energy Drink corporation.
A representative from Red Bull agreed to book Break with Reality for a private Red Bull Party in the fall of 2005.[citation needed] From there other Red Bull representatives showed interest in the group and have offered them performance opportunities around the country for the next two years. The band looks forward to playing for tens of thousands of people at the International "Flugtag" event in October 2006 in Denver, Colorado.[citation needed]
