Brian Calhoun (born May 8, 1984, in Atlanta, Georgia) is an American football running back for the Detroit Lions. After achieving numerous honors in High School, including being named All-America, first-team all-state, and being ranked the nation’s 12th best RB by Rivals.com, Brian attended the University of Colorado.
After playing there for his freshman (in 2002), and sophomore (2003) years, Calhoun decided to return back home and attend the University of Wisconsin. This decision was largely based on the University of Colorado coaches wanting to turn Brian into a wide receiver.[citation needed] Because of NCAA transfer rules, Brian had to sit out the entire 2004 season. However, he kept himself busy by participating in the 4x100-meter relay team. The relay team would go on to become the 2005 Big Ten Conference Champions.
Last season, being finally allowed to play, Calhoun enjoyed a fantastic year and blossomed into a Dark horse Heisman candidate before fading a little bit towards the end of the season. Along with teammate Brandon Williams, Calhoun was named 2nd Team All-American by the Associated Press.
Calhoun was named the MVP of the Capital One Bowl, after gaining 213 yards and 1 touchdown in the Wisconsin Badgers victory over the Auburn Tigers.
Calhoun decided to forego his senior season at Wisconsin and entered the 2006 NFL Draft. He was selected in the third round (pick # 74) by the Detroit Lions. Calhoun was placed on injured reserve for the season in November after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament.
