Brian Cashman

Brian Cashman is the Senior Vice-President and General Manager of the New York Yankees. He is a native of Lexington, Kentucky, where he attended Lexington Catholic High School before moving to Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. He graduated from the Georgetown Preparatory School in 1985 and The Catholic University of America in 1989.
He started with the Yankees organization as an intern, rising in the organization until becoming GM in 1998 at the age of 30. His predecessor was Bob Watson.
His tenure has seen the Yankees win five American League pennants and three World Series championships, with the team finishing first in its division every year. Major trades and acquisitions he has been responsible for include the trade of David Wells for Roger Clemens; the Alfonso Soriano-for-Alex Rodriguez deal; and the free agent signings of Jason Giambi, Hideki Matsui, Jose Contreras, and Johnny Damon. He also negotiated the long-term contracts of Bernie Williams and Derek Jeter, which are widely expected to keep the popular players with the team until their retirement.
Despite the team's success, in 2005 Cashman considered leaving the team due to conflicts with owner George Steinbrenner and organizational disputes between team officials in New York City and Tampa. The Washington Nationals were also rumored to be interested in hiring Cashman, which would have brought him back to where he attended school. Instead, Cashman agreed to a new contract following the conclusion of the 2005 season. As a sign that Cashman had gained final say over personnel matters, the team's organizational meetings were held in New York, for the first time in several years.
At the July 31st trading deadline of 2006, he made two shrewd trades,acquiring Bobby Abreu and Cory Lidle (who was tragically killed on October 11th, when his private plane collided with a NYC high rise) for minor league pitchers Matt Smith and Carlos Monastarios, minor league shortstop C.J. Henry, and minor league catcher Jesus Sanchez. He also acquired outfielder/1st baseman Craig Wilson from the Pittsburgh Pirates for starter Shawn Chacon. After the team was eliminated in an upset by the Detroit Tigers in the ALDS, he went back to work. He traded disgruntled outfielder Gary Sheffield to the Tigers for minor league pitchers Humberto Sanchez, Anthony Claglett, and Kevin Whelan. He then traded disappointing starter Jaret Wright to the Baltimore Orioles for reliever Chris Britton. In January of 2007, he traded Randy Johnson, who had been a disappointment in pinstripes back to Arizona for reliever Luis Vizcaino, minor league pitchers Ross Ohlendorf and Steven Jackson, and minor league infielder Alberto Gonzalez.
It has remained a possibility for the past few years that because of Steinbrenner's desire to win and only finish first, that Cashman would be on the chopping block if the Yankees failed to win the World Series. However, in spite of a series of playoff losses Cashman remains in firm control of the Yankees.
