British Battalion (Malaya 1941)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The British Battalion (1941) was an ad hoc formation created during the Battle of Malaya from the survivors of two regular British Army battalions which had suffered heavy casualties during the early stages of the Japanese invasion in December 1941. The battalion was formed from the 2nd Bn, East Surrey Regiment and the 1st Bn, The Leicestershire Regiment and commanded by the CO of the Leicesters Lt.Col.Charles Esmond Morrison; the commander of the East Surreys, Lieut.Col.G.E.Swinton had been wounded. It fought brilliantly through out the rest of the campaign suffering a huge number of casualties and also making a name for itself that its survivors regarded with nearly as much pride as they had for the original regiments. The British Battalion was surrendered on Singapore when the British Army under General Arthur Percival surrendered in February 1942.
